Secondary School Students Explore Game Development
Twenty students across 4th, 5th and 6th year attended our annual Games Development Workshop this week. The workshop introduces students to the fundamentals of Computer Science through the creation of their own game.
The Games Development Workshop, broken into a morning and afternoon session, gave students an insight into key areas of interest in the technology sector as well as an understanding of topics covered in the Computing Science degree. Griffith College lecturer, Tim Dawson held the workshop in the state-of-the-art Mac labs with each student having the chance to interact with him while developing their games.
Dr. Waseem Akhtar, the Head of the Computing Faculty, gave a presentation to the students in the afternoon. Continuing from the skills learned in the morning, Dr. Akhtar talked to the students about the history and importance of computing science, as well as sharing insights into both personal career development and that within the I.T. industry, remarking that, "In every academic programme, there are usually modules and assignments where students learn about themselves, evaluate their own skills"
The Gaming Industry is relatively new to Ireland but it is definitely building a reputation with companies such as big players like EA Bioware, Zynga, Riot and Digit setting up offices here. The creative environment has attracted talent back to the country. Computer Games Technology is innovative and exciting from a technological and creative perspective, providing career opportunities for logical students.
Brenda Romero the internationally renowned gaming designer notes that Ireland has a lot to offer the Gaming Industry. Romero is excited by the potential the games market offers Ireland: “The natural creative and technical talent that Ireland is renowned for in software, animation, music and literature is a resource that is key to developing world-class games.”
