Griffith College panellists speak with the Leaving Cert Guidance Podcast

On 6 September 2021, a team of Griffith College panelists spoke with Donnchadh O’Mahony, the host of the Leaving Cert Guidance Podcast, about Griffith’s school initiatives, scholarships, and opportunities for both second-level and Griffith College students.

The conversation opened with Sarah Edmondson, Schools Liaison Officer at Griffith College Dublin, who gave an overview of the different programmes available to second-level students and schools, including a variety of workshops as part of Schools Week, maths revision workshops, competitions and open days. Sarah also spent some time explaining the Available Places facility provided by the CAO after the Round One offers have been made. This is a great option for students who are not completely happy with or sure about their first offer.

Dr. Robbie Smyth, Deputy Head of the Faculty of Journalism and Media Communications, joined the conversation next to explain the fast-paced and multifaceted world of journalism and media communications and what you can expect as a media student at Griffith. There is a growing communications industry in Ireland where Griffith College graduates have a big part to play, with successful alumni working at RTE, TV3, and Virgin Media, to name a few. Robbie also mentions the recent launch, for the third year, of the Creative Bursary, a partnership between Griffith College and the Institute of Advertising Practitioners in Ireland (IAPI), offering schools the chance to win a share of €10,000.

Karen Sutton, Head of Griffith’s Faculty of Law, was the third panelist to speak. Karen gave an in-depth insight into the unique opportunities available to students studying law at Griffith College while also explaining the many career prospects available to law graduates as an alternative to becoming a solicitor or barrister. The Law Faculty runs an annual Legal Debating Competition for secondary schools and invites students on to the campus to experience being a Law Student for a Day, attending lectures and chatting with current Griffith students.

The podcast closed with Erica Masterson, a recent Griffith College graduate in business and an Opportunity Scholarship winner, who explained from first-hand experience what the application process was like for the scholarship, what she enjoyed most about studying at Griffith College and what she plans to do next.
