Biography

Dr Robbie Smyth is Head of the Journalism & Media Communications Faculty at Griffith College. He lectures in research methods, media and cultural studies, political communication and business of media, particular the area of media regulation and compliance.

On what he loves about teaching, Robbie says;

“The interests, ingenuity and creative drive of students is one of the reasons I look forward to teaching. Seeing the students' research projects build from first steps in tutorials to finished dissertations, TV or radio documentaries and photographic projects is a privilege to be part of every year."

Robbie has a PhD from Queens University Belfast (2015) where his research involved a study of the quality and accuracy of news media opinion poll reporting. His other research interests include; the general area of political communications, how the media report industrial relations issues, the reporting of elections, politics, climate issues, art and cultural issues and how the media business is being transformed in the digital era.

In 2022, Palgrave Macmillan published his book The Invisible Republic: The Economics of Socialism and Republicanism in the 21st Century.
