Sinead Elliot former graduate from BA (Hons) in Interior Architecture has being Commended in the Universal Design category at the prestigious IDI Graduate Design Awards
We are thrilled to congratulate Sinead Elliot on being Commended in the Universal Design category at the prestigious IDI Graduate Design Awards. Her visionary project, Creative Connections, exemplifies the transformative power of inclusive, research-led design in community spaces.
Creative Connections: An Intergenerational Community Arts Centre
Located in Castle Park, Dalkey, Co. Dublin, Creative Connections reimagines a protected 19th-century mock-Tudor mansion as a vibrant, intergenerational community arts centre. Designed as a welcoming “third space”, the centre encourages creativity, connection, and cultural exchange across all ages.
The project is grounded in a research-led approach emphasizing:
- Universal design principles
- Human-centred thinking
- Holistic sustainability
It balances heritage conservation with adaptive reuse, preserving key architectural features while integrating modern accessibility upgrades and environmentally conscious systems.
A Lobster Pot as Inspiration
The project draws inspiration from the lobster pot, reimagined as a vessel of resilience and connection. This concept shapes flexible, open spaces, from sculptural canopies to adaptable studio pods, creating a unifying, accessible design language.
Inclusive and Sustainable Design
Creative Connections integrates universal design with sustainability at every level. Natural and recycled materials like reclaimed timber, cork, and 3D-printed recycled wood ensure comfort and environmental responsibility. Warm, low-glare lighting and tailored acoustic solutions support usability, calm, and inclusivity across all ages and abilities.
Spaces for Connection
The centre’s layout balances heritage with adaptability:
- Ground Floor: café, reception, well-being space, and accessible facilities.
- First Floor: auditorium, studios, and gym for creative and social engagement.
- Basement & Outdoors: staff spaces, sensory courtyard, open-air auditorium, woodland walks, and inclusive playground.
Universal Design in Action
Rooted in Sinead Elliot’s research, the project applies the seven principles of Universal Design to create intuitive, equitable, and flexible environments. From step-free access to sensory-aware detailing, the centre welcomes everyone, from young children to older adults.
A Model for the Future
Creative Connections showcases how inclusive, values-led design can shape sustainable civic spaces that evolve with community needs, offering a replicable framework for cultural and educational projects.
