Enhance Your Research Supervision Skills – Join Our Online Summer School June 2025

Our Supervision of Research Summer School is a unique, one-week module designed to help you build the knowledge, strategies, and tools necessary to support you in your role as a research supervisor. Whether you are supervising undergraduate or postgraduate learners, this module will equip you with everything you need to support your supervisory practice. 

This online Summer School will run for five mornings (9:30am-1:30pm) from Monday 23rd June to Friday 27th June, followed by one assignment submission in early July. Over the week, you will engage in interactive workshops, collaborative discussions, and reflective activities that will support and enhance your research supervision techniques. It is important to note that to register for this module, you will need to be available for the full week.

By the end of the program, you will be able to: 

  • Reflect critically on your experience as a research supervisor and identify areas for professional growth. 

  • Examine models of research supervision and adapt them to fit your own context. 

  • Understand and address ethical issues in research supervision. 

  • Develop strategies to provide constructive feedback and support students at all stages of their research. 

  • Gain insights into managing supervisory relationships and fostering academic success. 

Program Structure & Topics

 

  1. Research Pedagogy 

    Understanding supervision as both a form of teaching and learning support. 

    Exploring different models and supervisory styles. 

  2. The Research Process 

    The stages of research, from undergraduate to postgraduate levels. 

    Dissertation versus practice-based research. 

  3. Building Effective Supervisory Relationships 

    Setting expectations, managing meetings, and supporting learners through academic writing. 

    Strategies for handling diverse learners and addressing challenges. 

  4. Research Integrity 

    Ethical considerations, intellectual property, and institutional policies. 

    The role of AI in modern research practices. 

  5. Assessment of Research 

    Providing feedback, both formative and summative. 

    The role of internal and external examiners in the assessment process. 

Learning Approach 

The Summer School will be delivered over 5 mornings online, with interactive sessions and time for independent reflection, group discussions, and peer learning. Participants will be encouraged to apply the insights gained from each session to their own supervisory contexts. 

In addition to live workshops, you will have access to a variety of e-learning resources, including reading lists, discussion forums, and video content. The program is designed to be highly participatory, with activities and assessments that encourage collaboration and real-time feedback. 

Assignment & Assessment 

Following the week of live sessions, participants will submit a final assignment. This assignment will allow you to apply the strategies learned during the Summer School to create a comprehensive action plan for improving your research supervision practice. Feedback will be provided both from peers and the course facilitators to support your ongoing professional development.
