This course is open for skilled tradespeople and others with experience in the manufacturing industry to become professional industrial engineers.

 

Industrial engineers are prime sources of management talent. They make decisions concerning the best use of people, materials, equipment, and energy in achieving an organisation's aims. This course has been designed with the needs of industry in mind, Ireland has currently a shortage of Industrial Engineers and our graduates can expect to work across a variety of industries including but not limited to, manufacturing, transportation, consultancy, distribution services, and the health and pharmaceutical sectors.

The QQI Level 7 Bachelor of Engineering in Industrial and Systems Engineering is available a part-time basis and aims to teach participants how to analyse and improve business processes and accomplish the best use of resources.

Course Details

Industrial Engineering Programmes

Industrial Engineering Principles and Systems (10 ECTS)

This module delivers the key foundational elements of industrial engineering. It covers topics that challenge learners to think about how the factors of production can be brought together to create maximum value in an enterprise setting. Learners are taught the necessary skills to break down problems into components, characterise the problems and determine their root cause by gathering data from the environment, existing data collection and storage media.

Data Analysis (5 ECTS)

This module provides learners with the ability to evaluate and conduct appropriate statistical analysis on data relating to engineering processes. The objective of the module is to ensure that all learners can establish and interrogate data reliably to yield accurate results. Learners develop the statistical techniques necessary to correctly interpret their findings and the related implications and limitations of their analyses for the engineering applications under consideration.

Lean Systems (5 ECTS)

This module addresses core aspects of what an industrial engineer must deliver and combines many of the traditional elements of industrial engineering such as method study under the lean umbrella. Modern approaches to gathering and analysing data are introduced and learners gain an understanding of the practical issues and limitations in an organisational context. Learners are equipped with the skills and competencies to take the American Society for Quality Green Belt Certification examination.

Project Management (5 ECTS)

In this module learners are taught how to apply project management principles across a range of industrial engineering settings. Learners are equipped with the skills to establish and communicate clear objectives; to apply resources efficiently; to monitor progress; to identify in a timely manner where corrective action needs to be taken; and to provide related reports to management in accordance with project management principles.

Professional Practice (5 ECTS)

This module equips learners with the knowledge and skills necessary to adopt behaviour patterns consistent with the ethos of the industrial engineering profession. These behaviour patterns include: communicating effectively with individuals and groups at all levels in an organisation and understanding the industrial relations context in which industrial engineers operate.

Industrial Engineering Finances (5 ECTS)

This module develops the learners’ application of various cost accounting principles and techniques. Learners gain the skills to apply management accounting techniques to quantitative and qualitative information in the generation of management accounting reports. The module enables learners to analyse management accounting information and apply it to a wide range of planning, control and decision-making situations.

Emerging Technologies and Industrial Systems (5 ECTS)

This module highlights the importance of leading edge technologies in helping to overcome industrial engineering challenges. New technologies are visited in a relaxed but exciting environment where experts share real-time technology development efforts in areas such as the Internet of Things, 3D printing and the future of problem-solving using big data analytics. The assessment is structured to engage the learner in taking on a small research project in one of the leading-edge technologies and demonstrating how it could be applied in a real problem-solving way within a familiar work environment.

Logistics and Supply Chain Management (5 ECTS)

This module develops the learners' understanding of supply chain management processes and the various tools and techniques adopted for the effective management of supply chains. Contemporary supply chain management practices are closely aligned to industrial engineering practices in areas such as cost optimisation and the management of material, finance and information flows. Additional parallels exist between supply chain and industrial engineering approaches in many areas of business such as the management of lean manufacturing systems, agility and flexibility, systems integration, and the management of strategic supplier relationships.

Environment and Sustainability (5 ECTS)

This module informs learners of the seismic changes to the energy markets in Ireland and how policies are shaped to meet EU mandated environmental targets. Today’s engineers must understand why these changes have come about and how they impact on Ireland’s energy policy. 

Industrial Engineering Project (10 ECTS)

This module provides learners with direct experience of applying industrial engineering skills in actual work settings. Upon project completion, learners can demonstrate their industrial abilities in the work environment to achieve organisational goals.

This programme provides the learners with an understanding of modern logistics and supply chain management. Learners are taught how to apply project management principles to ensure that improvements to the supply chain and logistics can be brought about using a proven structure.

Project Management (5 ECTS)

In this module learners are taught how to apply project management principles across a range of industrial engineering settings. Learners are equipped with the skills to establish and communicate clear objectives; to apply resources efficiently; to monitor progress; to identify in a timely manner where corrective action needs to be taken; and to provide related reports to management in accordance with project management principles.

Logistics and Supply Chain Management(5 ECTS)

This module develops the learners' understanding of supply chain management processes and the various tools and techniques adopted for the effective management of supply chains. Contemporary supply chain management practices are closely aligned to industrial engineering practices in areas such as cost optimisation and the management of material, finance and information flows. Additional parallels exist between supply chain and industrial engineering approaches in many areas of business such as the management of lean manufacturing systems, agility and flexibility, systems integration, and the management of strategic supplier relationships.

This programme focuses on fundamental industrial engineering principles in terms of lean systems and tools. Learners gain the skills and knowledge to examine work and look for contemporary solutions informed by current technology trends, quality systems and environmental solutions. Learners are also taught how to express a return on investment and use financial information to identify cost-saving opportunities.

Progression

Academic Progression

Graduates of the B.Eng. in Industrial Engineering may be considered eligible to join related Level 8 programmes depending on their particular combination of qualifications, experience and suitability.

Career Progression

Graduates of the B.Eng. in Industrial Engineering will have a good basis for professional progression in industrial engineering. There is currently a need for skilled industrial engineers across all industries, in manufacturing (traditional and modern), and services as well as in banking, transportation, consultancy, distribution services, the health sector, military and other areas of government.
