Course Details

The module is delivered over a 12-week period in a single semester. Learners work together to produce short video projects. The overall structure follows the production process broken into pre-production, production and post-production of the final project.

Through a mix of lectures, tutorials, case studies, and writing exercises, participants will engage with both the theory and practice of screen storytelling. Writing outputs will include loglines, synopses, treatments, and two script / scene drafts, providing a hands-on approach to story development. Learners will demonstrate autonomous research, creative ideation, and effective communication through the development of original, written materials for screen media.

Core Subjects

During the first set of lectures, learners will focus on the fundamental principles of storytelling. They will explore narrative structure, theme, and character, and begin developing their own documentary concept. By the end of this phase, each learner will have a clear idea, synopsis, and treatment for their short film. Films on the curriculum will be used as case studies for this section.

Over the next set of lectures, learners will participate in hands-on workshops covering the key technical skills required for film production. This includes camera operation, sound recording, lighting, interview techniques, and basic editing. Learners will also finalise their production plans and schedules. Some of these sessions may be given as weekend workshops.

In the final set of lecture hours, learners will engage in structured post-production workshops. These sessions will guide them through the editing process from assembling rough cuts to fine-tuning structure, sound, and visual presentation culminating in the completion and screening of their short films.

The final submission for the completed films will be made at the end of the programme allowing learners additional time to work on their projects and process folio entry.
