Get Started with DSLR Photography: A 2 Day Introduction to Understanding Your Camera

This beginner's 2 day course covers the fundamentals of DSLR (Digital single-lens reflex) photography, focusing on understanding manual settings, achieving high-quality results, and learning basic camera mechanics and exposure principles. Discover how to effectively capture various scenes and optimise your photographs for both social media and print.  Gain confidence in using your DSLR camera effectively, understanding key photography concepts, and producing better-quality images. This foundation course equips you with the essential tools to continue exploring and improving your photography skills independently or to pursue further advanced courses.

 

The course is validated by Griffith College. This course focuses on the development of professional skills and does not sit on the national framework.

Lecturer Biography

Sinead Murphy Programme Lecturer

Sinéad Murphy is an accomplished photographer and educator who has been delivering photography modules at Griffith College since 2004. With a strong background in editorial and commercial photography, Sinéad has been commissioned for work by The Independent on Sunday (UK) and The Guardian. Her photography has also appeared in the British Journal of Photography, The Irish Independent, The Irish Examiner.

Her portraits of comedians, actors, musicians, and other creatives are often commissioned for press, posters, and platforms such as Ticketmaster, festival listings, and show campaigns. Her work has been exhibited nationally in Dublin and internationally in London and Brighton. Sinéad served as a panel member and picture editor for the book The Gathering – Reflections on Ireland and led the image editing team for Today FM’s US2 book.

How to Apply

Entry Requirements

Over 18 Years
Direct entry
No prior photography knowledge or experience using a DSLR camera is required. 

English Language 
It is recommended that applicants have a good understanding of both written and spoken English. Non-native English speakers are not required to submit a copy of IELTs test results or take an English-level test as part of the application process.

Photography Equipment
Learners must acquire the following:

  • DSLR Camera
  • Formatted Memory Card
  • Notepad and Pen
  • Tripod useful but not essential
