GCC's Rachel Andrews, receives runner-up prize for Hubert Butler Essay

Congratulations to Griffith College Cork's Head of Journalism, Rachel Andrews who was runner up in the Hubert Butler Essay Prize.

The new Hubert Butler Essay Prize is intended to encourage the art of essay-writing with a European dimension and to expand interest in Butler's work.

Butler was born into an Irish Protestant family in Kilkenny in 1900 who later went on to help hundreds of Jews escape from Nazi persecution.

It is designed to reflect Butler’s interest in the common ground between the European nation states that emerged after the First World War; his concern with the position of religious and ethnic minorities; his life and writings as an encapsulation of the mantra ‘Think globally, act locally’; the importance of the individual conscience; and his work with refugees.

The prize is organised by the newly founded European arts charity HEART London, which promotes the best of European liberal values in the arts – values that Hubert Butler embodied.

Awarded annually, the prize is open to EU citizens.
