On Wednesday, 6th May 2024, Griffith College hosted the Pride Panel Discussion, 10 Years Since Marriage Equality and Gender Recognition in Ireland: Where are we now? at the Dublin Main Campus. The event was MC’d by Becks Butler, an Innovation, Solutions and Transformation Specialist at Griffith College.

The panellists on the day were:

Eric Warren Cunningham: Working in the legal sector in Dublin, Youth Leader in Talk About Youth in St Andrew’s Resource Centre.

Pradeep Mahadeshwar: Founder of Queer Asian Pride Ireland and the Queer Spectrum Film Festival.

Claire Mooney: Contributor and steering group member of the "Pride at Home" project at Dublin City University.

The event was open to Griffith College staff, lecturers, learners, and visitors from the wider community, and it was wonderful to see so many people in attendance. Attendees were treated to a 'Happy Pride 2025' cake, which displayed a beautiful array of rainbow colours once John Eardly and Becks Butler cut the first slice!

Pride Panel 2025

This year's event marked the significant milestone of the 10th Anniversary of Marriage Equality and the Gender Recognition Act in Ireland, providing an excellent opportunity to take stock and reflect on the journey over the last 10 years for LGBTQIA+ lives, including the highs, the lows, the challenges, and the achievements. Through conversation, our panellists explored the transformative power of higher education settings in empowering LGBTQIA+ individuals and fostering inclusive communities as an environment where diversity flourishes and liberates not just some people or some groups but all people and all groups.

We want to say a final Thank You to Becks Butler and our fantastic panellists, Eric Warren Cunningham,  Pradeep Mahadeshwar, and Claire Mooney, for taking the time to make this fantastic event possible!
