The Award Year BA in Interior Architecture & Design and BA (Hons) in Interior Architecture cohorts were delighted to welcome Fíonnadh McGonigle, Senior Built Environment Design Advisor at the National Disability Authority (NDA), for an engaging lunchtime talk on Universal Design for the Built Environment and the Universal Design Graduate Awards.

Fíonnadh shared valuable insights into how Universal Design can shape more inclusive, accessible spaces for everyone, a key consideration for emerging designers and architects. Her talk highlighted the importance of designing environments that meet the needs of all users, regardless of age, ability, or circumstance.

With a background in architecture and a Master’s in Advanced Environmental and Energy Studies from the Centre for Alternative Technology, Fíonnadh brings both technical expertise and a strong commitment to social sustainability. Her journey, from architectural practice in Co. Wicklow to her role at the Centre for Excellence in Universal Design, reflects her passion for sustainability, ethics, and accessibility in design.

Students had the opportunity to ask questions and explore how Universal Design principles can inform their own projects, ensuring that design solutions are not only beautiful but also equitable and inclusive.
