Course Overview
Are you interested in progressing within the hotel industry by enhancing your skills in recruiting, selecting, and developing teams?
The course has been developed in collaboration with the Irish Hotels Federation (IHF) Skillnet.
This course is designed for professionals in the hotel sector to develop the participants' management capabilities, enabling them to build, motivate and manage successful teams and individuals. This programme has been created to specifically address the identified needs of staff who are involved in recruiting, selecting and developing teams in the hotel sector.
Why Study Applied HRM for Irish Hotels and Guesthouses at Griffith College?
This course was designed in response to the challenges facing the hotel industry, including the difficulty it has in attracting, developing, and retaining the talent required to face the future. The industry has recognised a requirement for managers in this sector to be supported and provided with further education in order to skillfully address the needs of their people.
The Applied Human Resource Management course delivers key objectives for staff in an HR role in the hotel industry so that they can:
- Recognise the key factors involved in human resource management to develop the capacity for hotels and guesthouses to achieve greater success through people.
- Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of the major HR issues involved in managing a diverse and multicultural workforce.
- Identify the key factors involved in building, motivating, retaining and developing teams of people

Course Content
- General Human Resource Management Principles in the Hotel Sector
Apply Human Resource Management theory and best practices appropriately.
- Performance Management and Team Building
Analyse best practices in performance appraisal systems and their impact on motivation and business competitiveness.
- Recruitment and Selection
Appraise key factors and challenges in the recruitment and selection processes.
- Employment Law
Assess the implications of disciplinary and grievance procedures and employment law in the hotel sector in Ireland.
- Employee Development
Identify the appropriate mentoring, career planning and team-building practices to support staff development and retention.
- Diversity Management
Appraise the key factors and challenges in managing a diverse workforce.
Timetables
This course will run on Wednesday over 12 weeks through blended delivery.
On-campus classes will run from 1pm to 4pm, and online classes (live using Zoom) will run from 9.30am to 12.30pm.

How to Apply
Entry Requirements
- The Applied Human Resource Management programme is designed for those working in human resources supervisory and management roles in the hotel sector with a minimum of 12 Months experience.
English Language:
If English is not your native language, you must show that your English level is of a suitable standard.
Applicants under 23 years of age:
Minimum of 5 O6/H7 grades, to include a language (English, Irish or another language) in the Irish Leaving Certificate or equivalent award
OR
QQI FETAC Level 5 Full Award
Applicants over 23 years of age (Mature students):
Direct Entry - If you are 23 years or over from the 1st January of this year, you can apply for this course directly using the College’s online application form.
