Land Law (Taster Course)
Course Overview
This course will ensure a detailed knowledge of the rules of land law.
This course will enable learners to trace current entitlements from those succeeded to contractually and foster an understanding of legal and equitable interests in property.
This course focuses on the development of professional skills; while it does not sit on the national framework, the module is drawn from Griffith College’s suite of QQI-validated programmes.
Why Study Land Law at Griffith College?

- Explain the principles governing property rights and interests in land.
- Analyse statutory and equitable doctrines as they apply to land transactions.
- Apply land law principles to practical scenarios involving ownership and transfer.
- Apply principles of contract to complex factual scenarios to determine rights and remedies.
- Conduct research on land law issues and communicate findings effectively.
- Evaluate the social and ethical dimensions of property rights and reform proposals.

Land Law
- The Nature of Land Law and its Historical Background
- Property Rights under the Constitution (Proportionality and State Interference)
- Estates, including Freehold Estates, Leasehold Estates and Hybrid Interests.
- Equity and the Doctrine of Notice
- Co-Ownership, including Joint Tenancy and Tenancy in Common.
- Adverse Possession
- Licences and Proprietary Estoppel
- Registration Systems
- Family and Civil Partnership Property
- Mortgages
- Easements
- Landlord and Tenant Law
- Succession Law, including Probate, Wills, Intestacies and Administration of Estates

Entry Requirements
All applicants must complete the Introduction to the Irish Legal System course.
Mature Students
If you are 23 years or over from the 1st January of this year, you can apply for this course directly using the College’s online application form.
Under 23 Years
Old Leaving Cert (Pre 2017)
Min. 5 OD3's in the Irish Leaving Certificate or equivalent award and 1 year's legal experience.
New Leaving Cert
Min. 5O6/H7's in the Irish Leaving Certificate or equivalent award and 1 year's legal experience.
English Language
If English is not your native language, you must show that your English level is of a suitable standard. For further information please contact a member of the Admissions Team.
