Our MA in Training and Education will help you revitalise your teaching and training by building on your existing skills and competencies, sharing practice and experience, and being introduced to leading edge research, support tools, pedagogies and resources.

Course details

The programme has three exit stages. The first semester is the same as the special purpose award. The next semester is equivalent to the postgraduate diploma. The final stage, the dissertation, is what turns this course into a Masters. It should be noted that students who have previously studied the first two stages may now go on to complete the Master's programme.

 

Year One
Pedagogical Practice 1

This first module on the programme offers learners opportunities to understand when and how to apply a wide range of teaching and training methods and techniques suitable to the needs of student groups. Learners develop diagnostic and creative skills, which allow them apply appropriate and relevant teaching and training supports and techniques.

Assessment and Programme Design

This module on the programme introduces learners to the landscape of post compulsory education. It seeks to enable the learner to discuss philosophies of higher & further education and training, their context and drivers, and interpret how they influence the design and assessment of programmes. Additionally, learners are exposed to principles and practice of constructively aligning assessment with learning outcomes.

Reflective Practice and Development

This module allows learners determine how their own philosophies of education and training influences their pedagogy. They also learn how to become reflective and evaluative practitioners by understanding the reflective and on-going process of their own learning and development as a trainer and/or educator.

Technology Enabled Learning

This module aims to introduce learners to the use of innovative technology in education to enhance the learning experience. Learners critically evaluate these technologies and assess their appropriateness for different users and groups of users. The module enables learners to assess technologies through their social and personal use and through the lens of pedagogy and learning theories allowing them to blend technology to enhance pedagogical practice.

Research Methodology

The purpose of this module is to provide learners with a practical opportunity to write a project proposal at a postgraduate level. Learners negotiate their research brief with appointed tutors. They draw on the advanced learning and development throughout the programme to tailor a proposal to specifically suit their own professional or academic practice. In doing so, learners draw on the many facets of research both in an educational context and in an industry environment.

Psychology and Inclusivity in Higher Education and Training

This module aims to support learners as they develop a broadly based, and intellectually challenging theoretical framework for teaching and learning, and an awareness of the current debates, literature and research in the area.

Professional Practice and Management

The Professional Practice and Management module embraces a diverse range of objectives. These objectives provide learners with the opportunity to evaluate cultural and social factors, which impact on teaching, training, learning and assessment, and to promote an inclusive and productive training and educational environment. It additionally allows learners to critically evaluate training and teaching within a professional context and to examine the cost benefit analysis for such education and training initiatives.

Year Two
Dissertation

This module enables learners to become more effective practitioners by further enhancing their investigative and critical thinking skills, while developing their expertise by completing a major project or piece of research.

How to Apply

Entry Requirements 

Applicants will need a Level 8 Primary degree in their area of expertise. There is also a minimum 30-hour teaching or training experience requirement (2 of which must be during the course of the programme).

Accreditation of Prior Learning and Prior Experience (APL/APEL):

We welcome applications from those with prior academic and/or professional learning experience which may be relevant to the MA in Training & Education programme.

Applicants who wish for their prior academic and/or professional learning experience to be considered are requested to indicate this at the time of application and we will be happy to examine all of the relevant documentation accordingly.

How to Apply

 Students who wish to apply for this course may apply directly to Griffith College.

Students will be required to submit a copy of their:

  • Primary degree award (Level 8)
  • A copy of their CV
  • A letter of reference proving their teaching/training experience
  • Proof of their identification in the form of a driver’s licence or passport.

Upon completion of the application form, students should upload these documents or alternatively send a scanned copy to [email protected] with an application for MA in Training and Education course (Level 9).

An Academic Administration Fee of EUR250.00 and a 2% Learner Protection Charge is applicable each academic year in addition to the fees quoted below.

2% Learner Protection Charge

All QQI accredited programmes of education and training of 3 months or longer duration are covered by arrangements under section 65 (4) of the Qualifications and Quality Assurance (Education and Training) Act 2012 whereby, in the event of the provider ceasing to provide the programme for any reason, enrolled learners may transfer to a similar programme at another provider, or, in the event that this is not practicable, the fees most recently paid will be refunded.

Progression

Academic Progression

On completion of the programme the learner can go on to pursue a Ph.D. in the area.

Career Progression

Learners who complete this programme will have a range of skills that will be attractive across all sectors in training and education. The programme will help those who are training in industry / private sector or lecturing in the 3rd level sector.

The skills acquired in this programme help the graduate become a more effective communicator and resource in any workplace. It helps the learner to progress their classroom presence in different areas and implement their new skills & knowledge of technology in the classroom.

The course also gives the learner the opportunity to start new practices and to network with others in the sector.
