Last night at a gala awards ceremony in the Aviva stadium, over 400 students gathered with media celebrities from the world of news and entertainment to recognise quality student media at the SMEDIAs – the Annual National Student Media Awards.

Griffith College won an unprecedented total of 6 awards, including two from BA (Hons) in Communications and Media Production student, Tiberio Ventura. With its much bigger student body, Trinity College managed to win ten, which meant that Griffith College finished the night joint second in the awards table, level with DCU. Considering its smaller student population, Griffith College again shows the strength of its media faculty picking up more awards per student, than any other media faculty in Ireland.

This is also the second year running that Griffith College Norwegian journalism and film student, Marius Dalseg Saetre, has been nominated for the SMEDIAs Sports Photographer of the Year award. Marius graduated from the BA (Hons) in Journalism and Media degree at Griffith College in 2012 and returned to take our Diploma in Media Techniques. Among the media workers and celebrities presenting the prizes were, Oliver Callan, Claire Byrne, Marty Morrissey, Barry Duggan, Ursula Halligan, and our very own Griffith College journalism graduate, Rose of Tralee, Maria Walsh.

SMEDIA winner and Griffith journalism student Robert Morrisey live-tweeted the event and had this to say.

"Winning six awards in total, the night kicked off with nomintated Griffith Students’ Union publication, Griffiti, unfortunately missing out on Small College Publication of the Year. This was presented by Griffith journalism graduate, and current Rose of Tralee, Maria Walsh.  Third year BA Journalism student, Robert Morrissey, picked up the first Griffith award for Blog of the Year, closely followed by Marius Dalseg Saetre who won Sports Photographer of the Year. Griffith College Cork student, Ellie O’Bryne, won the award for Radio Documentary of the Year.  While BA Journalism student and writer for the42.ie, Ryan Bailey, scored another Griffith SMEDIA for Sports Writer of the Year also. Finally, Photography student Tiberio Ventura had back-to-back wins for TV Production of the Year and Photographer of the Year."

With over 1000 entries, the competition was extrememly strong and Griffith College would like to extend its congratulations to both all the 19 nominees and the 6 winners below:
