Developments in layout and design, internet technologies and mobile phone applications and advancements have created a huge demand for visual arts professionals with a high level of new skills and creative, artistic, commercial and communications talents.

Our Photography Department has almost fifteen years’ experience in providing superior standard photographic education and training. We deliver award-winning courses in photography and have gained an enviable reputation in the Irish photographic industry.

Our photography course graduates are now working in all genres of photographic practices and we have long enjoyed the support of our colleagues in the Irish Professional Photographers’ Association. In addition, Griffith students have dominated the sMedia awards for the last number of years. 

Our students have won News Photographer of the Year 2011, TV Production of the Year 2012 and 2014, Photographer of the Year 2012, Sports Photographer of the Year 2013, and ‘Smedia Photographer of the Year 2013. In 2013, all five Photographer of the Year finalists were from Griffith College. We’re very proud that our students have also won Inspirational Arts Awards 2011, Irish Times Amateur Photographer of the year – Source Award 2012 and numerous IPPA awards. 

The BA in Photographic Media is offered on a three year full-time basis or a part-time version also offered over three years, the first time this level of study has been offered in this format in Ireland.The programme has a distinct commercial bias, a professional approach allied to analytical skills and creative judgement. That said there is the opportunity for students to explore all genres of the medium. 

Our photography course graduates are highly skilled, experienced and above all employable. They are consistently recognised for adding to the visual arts media in Ireland and abroad. Graduates will have the skills to go straight into employment or for further study at even higher levels.

All QQI accredited programmes of education and training of 3 months or longer duration are covered by arrangements under section 65 (4) of the Qualifications and Quality Assurance (Education and Training) Act 2012 whereby, in the event of the provider ceasing to provide the programme for any reason, enrolled learners may transfer to a similar programme at another provider, or, in the event that this is not practicable, the fees most recently paid will be refunded.

How to Apply

Applicants under 23 years of age on 1st of January, 2016 must apply through the CAO system Please consult the CAO website for information on important dates for 2016 applications.

Applicants over 23 years of age on 1st January, 2016 (Mature Students) or Part-Time Applicants must apply directly. Mature students will be asked for a copy of their passport and applications should be made before the 21st September 2016. Part-time Applicants that are under 23 years on Jan 1st 2016 will be asked for a copy of their passport, Leaving Certificate results / FETAC qualifications or equivalent and must meet the minimum entry requirements for the programme.

Academic Progression: 

Further study is an option for students who successfully complete this photography degree; the logical progression is to take the final year of the BA (Hons) in Journalism and Visual Media.

Having completed the BA in Journalism & Visual Media you may also go even further and study one of the three specialist media Masters programmes offered here at Griffith College. You may also consider pursuing other postgraduate options at prestigious academic institutions across the UK and Europe.
