Three Alumni Achieve Election Success

Griffith College Dublin

Former Rose of Tralee among those heading to Brussels.

The Griffith College community was thrilled to see the success of three alumni in recent elections.

Kazi Ahmed, who graduated from Griffith with an MSc in International Business in 2004, was elected as a councillor for Glencullen-Sandyford. Kazi has lived in Sandyford for eleven years and was elected with the goals of protecting green spaces, providing affordable childcare, building a sustainable future and more.

Brian O’Donoghue, who holds a BA in Journalism and Visual Media from Griffith, was re-elected to Carlow County Council. First elected in 2014, he is one of the youngest Cathaoirleachs in the country. Two of Brian’s significant projects are playgrounds in Rathvilly and Hacketstown.

Maria Walsh, also a graduate of the BA in Journalism and Visual Media programme, won a surprise victory, granting her a seat in the European Parliament. The first LGBTQ winner of the Rose of Tralee, it is not Maria’s first time making headlines! She said of her victory, “I had a strong team and the party rowed in behind us from the start.” Maria has already promised to “hit the ground running” in Brussels.

Congratulations to all three!
