An Accomplished Lecturer Delivering the Child Protection Course
Colm Dempsey is a retired member of An Garda Siochána, he is a freelance Consultant and Trainer on Human and Children’s Rights specialising in the area of violence against women & children. His knowledge around the complex issues emanates from personal and professional frontline experiences as a Garda, and further enhanced through ongoing continuous professional development nationally and internationally, academic qualifications, innovative research and ongoing analysis of best practice and policy from around the world. He is a former Garda Trainer on Violence against Women & Children.The Background
Academically, he is a graduate from Newry & Kilkeel Institute for Higher and Further Education, Northern Ireland in 1998 in Child Protection. He is a graduate from the University of Teesside, UK where in 2001 he received a Certificate in Professional Policing (Domestic Violence) and in 2003, graduating with MSc Masters Justice in Society. In 2008, he graduated with a Masters in Advanced Studies in Children’s Rights from the University of Fribourg, Switzerland.
He is the former Chairman of the Irish Branch of British Association for the Study and Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (BASCPAN) and is an occasional lecturer on Child Protection and Safeguarding at University College Dublin.
He has both attended and presented at prestigious international conferences and other forums on the issue of violence against women and children in Ireland, the United Kingdom, Belgium, Cyprus, Canada, Switzerland and the USA.
Colm’s main specialties are human and children's rights, gender-based violence, crimes of violence against women and children, child rights advocate. He is very passionate about all of these topics and he has a deep understanding in all these areas.
All of this vast experience means that Colm is able to run a very effective and interesting course on topics that are of great importance to all. His knowledge gained from working as a Garda is very practical and translates well into a classroom setting. His academic knowledge is also very important and it helps Colm to come up with some key insights and thoughts that are very relevant to the topic of child protection.
We are delighted to have such a knowledgeable and hands-on lecturer in Colm. We hope that students will continue to learn as much as possible from him in future courses.
Colm has run a number of successful child protection courses in Griffith College City Centre in the past and is looking forward to running more over the coming months/years.
