Why study a business course at Griffith College?

Higher Certificate in Business graduate and Best Academic Achievement prizewinner at November’s graduations, Gillian Sheehy explains why she would recommend the course to Leaving Certificate students.

Name: Gillian Sheehy

Course: Higher Certificate in Business

Year Of Graduation: 2014

Nationality: Irish

Home Town / Country: Dublin, Ireland

My Current Situation

In November 2014 I graduated from the Higher Certificate in Business course and I decided to continue my studies at Griffith College. I’m currently in the second year of the BA (Hons) in Business Studies degree.

Recommendations for the Higher Certificate in Business, Griffith College & Dublin

I would most definitely recommend Griffith to other students. The College offers an extensive range of courses that can lead to a wide variety of careers. The size of the College is also great and very convenient as it’s not too big but still feels very comfortable and spacious. It is also minutes away from the city centre which makes it very accessible for commuting in from the Dublin suburbs.

Preparing For The Higher Certificate in Business

When I started the first year of the Higher Certificate in Business my mantra that I kept telling myself was to come into college with an open mind and try and gain as much experience as possible during my studies. So far I have always ensured I’m around for faculty, study and social events held throughout the year at the College and these experiences have been a great way to meet new people and learn.

Main Tips for New Griffith Business Students

I would strongly recommend that new students make a real effort to interact with fellow students and lecturers during classes. The lecturers are very supportive and will explain as much as they can to help you understand.

Highlight of My Time At Griffith

The highlight of my time in Griffith was receiving the President’s Award for Best Academic Achievement for the Higher Certificate in Business at the graduation ceremony in November 2014. It was a very exciting time for me and I was so honoured to receive such an award.

My Most Useful Experiences

I have learnt to interact with many different kinds of people during my time at Griffith. I found this to be very beneficial because it has heightened my awareness of cultural differences, improved my communication skills and the way I interact with different nationalities within the business environment.

Why I Chose Griffith

The main reason I chose to study in Griffith was due to the wide range of courses available in the Faculty of Business and the course progression options available after the Level 6 Higher Certificate in Business.

I had the choice to transfer to the second year of the BA (Hons) in Business Studies or the BA (Hons) in Accounting and Finance, or the third year of the BA in Marketing, or the BA in Business. So I knew the Higher Certificate would be a fantastic stepping-stone before making a decision about continuing my studies and joining the Business (Hons) degree course.

I also knew that the small class sizes would be very beneficial. I found it was an invaluable opportunity to interact with the lecturers and get to know them and my classmates. It really encouraged me to actively participate and engage in discussions within the classroom.

What I Liked Most About Griffith

The huge variety of nationalities within the college has been one of my favourite and most memorable experiences. I have had the chance to meet so many different people and make friends from all over the world.

The lectures have also been incredibly supportive throughout my time here. If I have any queries about the modules I’m studying then they are always available to help and advise.

Best Bits Of Student Life At Griffith …

Throughout the College year there are many events that take place around holiday times. The Students’ Union is always organising exciting events at very reasonable prices so there’s a real student community feel to the campus. Arthur’s, the student bar always has a great atmosphere, which encourages people to interact with each other and share experiences.

Best Thing About Dublin ...

Dublin is a very exciting city. There is always a fantastic, vibrant atmosphere in the city with a good variety of nightlife so there is always something to do.

My Plans For The Future

My main ambition is to set up my own business in the future. I feel confident that Griffith College, its lecturers, and the experiences I’ve had whilst studying business have helped me build a solid foundation of knowledge and skills to enable me to fulfill this ambition.
