About The Leinster School of Music & Drama

The Leinster School of Music and Drama (LSMD) is an established national examining body in Ireland and the centre for excellence in music and drama education and training since 1904. The LSMD was established by Samuel Myerscough, acclaimed musician, teacher and examiner. Arthur Darley was one of the professors in that start-up year, teaching both classical violin and traditional Irish fiddle. Among his many accomplishments, Darley was a founder member of the Feis Ceoil and the first musical director of the Abbey Theatre.

As a national examining body, the LSMD offers graded examinations in both music and drama subjects. We remain Ireland’s largest independent music and drama examining body. Since 2004, an annual celebration of excellence is held at the school. As part of our Excellence Awards, students are selected to compete for prestigious awards on their performance at the annual examinations. The finalists perform at a prize winners concert held in Griffith College every year.

Our graded exams are designed to encourage learners' technical and artistic development. We pride ourselves on the support and flexibility that we offer music and drama teachers.

The LSMD exams in music and drama serve as motivation and inspiration for the learner. Candidates work from a carefully structured syllabus towards a definite goal. The support and flexibility that the LSMD offer music and drama teachers is reflected in the thousands of teachers who prepare their students for our grade examinations.

We work with each teacher individually on the best option for their students’ exams. We offer a choice of In Person and Online Exams (pre-recorded exams or live Zoom exams). We recommend the pre-recorded option for anyone with weak broadband connectivity.

If you have any questions about the process please do not hesitate to contact us, we’re here to help.
