Griffith College in the Community

Overview

Griffith College has been part of the fabric of Dublin, Cork and Limerick for decades, and being a good neighbour is part of who we are. Across a wide range of activities, our staff and students give their time, skills and resources to the communities around our campuses and beyond.

From supporting local festivals and charitable causes to partnering with industry bodies and community organisations, our involvement takes many different forms. It's part of how we see our role: not just as a college, but as an active participant in the places where we live, work and study.

Explore some of the ways we give back by clicking any of the tabs above.

Social

Griffith College plays an active role in the cultural and community life of Dublin, Cork and Limerick, supporting a wide range of local and national festivals, community initiatives and industry events. Our involvement takes many forms, from sponsorship and promotion to hands-on participation, reflecting our commitment to being a positive presence beyond the classroom.

Whether it's backing a neighbourhood festival, partnering with an industry body, or supporting a charitable initiative, we believe in giving back to the communities that shape who we are.

Some of the ways we help give back to the communities include:

Social Initiatives

Griffith College offers students the opportunity to earn credit towards their degree by working with the Innocence Project, which is housed on-site at Griffith College. There, students work under the close supervision of practising solicitors and barristers to help analyse case materials and liaise with clients to exonerate those clients who may have been wrongfully convicted.

The Irish Innocence Project at Griffith College has assisted large groups of persons in investigating their claims of factual innocence and has supported judicial review proceedings to clarify the law in access to evidence for post-conviction DNA testing. Additionally, we have publicised the plight of those who are the victim of a miscarriage of justice, and we helped to achieve a posthumous pardon for Mr. Harry Gleeson – the first such pardon in the history of the Irish state. In 2025, the Irish Innocence Project won the Pro Bono Publico / Community Law Firm / Lawyer of the Year award at the LEAP Irish Law Awards 2025.

The Project itself is an independent unincorporated association managed by a Board, which includes representatives from Griffith College, Trinity College, as well as solicitors and barristers.

The College’s Psychology Society undertook a clean-up of our local Dublin 8 area as part of Global Recycling Day 2026. Staff and students from across the college joined local representatives to collect litter in the streets surrounding the College. We look forward to this initiative growing further in future years, contributing to a clean and litter-free environment for our community.

Griffith Halls of Residence demonstrates strong community-oriented corporate social responsibility by actively supporting local charitable organisations, including St Vincent de Paul and Focus Ireland, which work on behalf of people experiencing homelessness and those struck by poverty in our local area. Since 2022, the Halls of Residence have made annual donations to these charities. Additionally, at the end of the academic year, GHR collects bedding and lightly used items from departing students and offers them to charities, including Dogs Trust, which helps care for dogs in shelters. GHR also convert unclaimed or abandoned bicycles into a resource for the wider community. Donated bikes are given to upcycling charities around Dublin, contributing to a circular economy and helping those in need. Clothing and food left by departed residents are recycled within the existing community. Find out more about life at GHR here

Griffith College is pleased to support the local Kevin’s Hurling & Camogie Club. The College provides space for the club’s meetings as well as sponsoring flags and banners for matches. The Military History Society of Ireland, founded in 1949, promotes the study of military history, particularly as it relates to Irish history and Irishmen at war. Their twice-yearly publication, The Sword, is renowned for its scholarly treatment of military history. Griffith College is proud to support the group by providing them with free spaces to host their events.

Friends of the Vocal Arts is a not-for-profit charitable body chaired by Griffith College President Professor Diarmuid Hegarty. As organisers of the Veronica Dunne International Singing Competition, they oversee a triennial contest with a truly global reach.

Griffith College is pleased to participate in this Dublin-wide celebration of history and culture. Built on the site of the old Griffith Barracks, the main Griffith campus in Dublin sits on ground that has been host to many historic events and people for hundreds of years. Daniel O'Connell was once imprisoned on the site, and it was even home to the 2nd Cavalry Unit of the Irish Defence Forces for almost 60 years. It is our pleasure to share this exciting history and all the stories it contains with the people of Ireland through the delivery of in-person and virtual tours, with our 2024 Culture Night event proving a great success.

Since opening in 2006, Pieta House has helped over 30,000 people in suicidal distress or engaging in self-harm. Education

Griffith College supports learning at every stage, from Leaving Cert students to guidance counsellors and second-level teachers. Through bursaries, revision programmes, lifelong learning festivals and outreach initiatives, we work to make education more accessible for students, teachers and communities across Dublin, Cork and Limerick.

Some of the ways we help students achieve their goals include:

Education Initiatives

Previously, Griffith College’s campuses hosted a free revision course in mathematics for students in advance of the Leaving Certificate exams. It was an excellent opportunity for students across the country to ask last-minute questions about both the Ordinary and Higher Level exam topics, with over 4,500 students registering for the revision in 2020.

Dr Tomás Mac Eochagáin, Griffith’s Director of Academic Programmes, was the presenter of the course. He has over 25 years of experience teaching mathematics and securing excellent exam results for students.

Aware of the importance of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) to the Irish and global economies, the College launched a STEAM Bursary in 2018 in partnership with CPL Recruitment, aimed at promoting STEAM subjects in DEIS second-level schools in Dublin, Cork and Limerick. The bursary provided the winning schools with between €2,000 and €5,000 to use towards STEAM facilities and training for students and staff.

The initiative was supported by a range of leading firms, including Wolfgang Digital, Microsoft and Core, who provided site visits, interview workshops and ‘day in the life of’ events where students met members of their current teams. Griffith College also donated PCs to several of the winning schools.

Griffith College regularly hosts events for Guidance Counsellors working in post-primary and further education institutions. These initiatives seek to strengthen understanding of evolving guidance practices, referral pathways, and collaborative supports for students. Recent themes have included Universal Design for Guidance (UDG) and Mental Health at Times of Transition.

The College also attends the annual conference of the Institute of Guidance Counsellors. For information on upcoming events, please contact our Schools Liaison team at schools@griffith.ie

In previous years, a number of staff members at Griffith College Cork and Dublin took part in Junior Achievement Ireland, whose stated goal is “to inspire and motivate young people to realise their potential by valuing education and understanding how to succeed in the world of work.” The Cork campus has supported the Enterprise in Action programme, which “encourages students to examine the role of an entrepreneur in today’s society.”

A newly updated programme from The Leinster School of Music & Drama (LSMD) will see LSMD instructors helping teachers prepare their students for the LSMD Group Drama Examinations. One of the first schools to benefit from the programme recently was Loreto College Crumlin; the students there enjoyed preparing for their LSMD grade exams and successfully passed their exams with flying colours!  Griffith College and the LSMD are looking forward to helping students achieve their goals and build their self-confidence throughout the year to come again.

Please contact us for more information on the LSMD’s Outreach Drama programmes and LSMD grade exams, available nationwide.

Members of the Griffith College community previously served as advisors and mentors in partnership with Teen-Turn, supporting teen girls from DEIS schools as they took on the Technovation Challenge. The young participants created social enterprises designed to contribute to their local communities using an app. One Griffith-mentored team from Limerick travelled to London to compete in the BT Young Pioneer Awards 2018 with their app, MindMoodz, which enabled young users to take control of their mental health and reach out for help and support.

Griffith College Cork's Law Faculty hosts Continuing Professional Development (CPD) events throughout the year, providing legal practitioners, business professionals and members of the public with opportunities to engage with current legal and regulatory developments. These events support lifelong learning and create a forum for professional discussion, networking and knowledge sharing.

The programme covers a wide range of topics, including employment law, mediation and dispute resolution, human rights, workplace equality, data protection, family law, regulatory compliance and developments in Irish and European law. Sessions are delivered by academics, legal practitioners and industry experts, offering practical insights into legal issues affecting individuals, organisations and society.

Technology

Griffith College's IT expertise reaches well beyond our campuses. We refurbish and donate computers to underserved schools abroad, and support recycling initiatives closer to home. It's one more way we put our resources to good use, locally and globally.

Some of the ways we use technology to help missions at home and abroad include:

Technology Initiatives

Griffith College’s IT department partners with Camara Education, a social enterprise that sends refurbished computers to underserved schools around the world, as well as providing training in digital literacy. Since the start of our partnership in 2009, Griffith has provided over 580 computers that Camara has in turn refurbished and reused in schools and communities in countries including Kenya, Ethiopia, Lesotho and Jamaica, impacting over 7000 learners.

In 2017, Camara worked with nearly 1600 educational institutions and delivered over 14,000 devices – including their 100,000th computer! They supported over 7000 teachers and impacted 434,234 learners. Griffith College is thrilled to work with a group so dedicated to creating and sustaining a lasting impact worldwide.

“I would like to express my gratitude for the donors who provide computers for my school. You have impacted our lives a lot, and we couldn't have done this without your help, so thanks for your donation!”

Griffith College has signed on to the WEEE Pledge, a battery recycling initiative supported by WEEE Ireland in support of LauraLynn, Ireland's Children's Hospice. WEEE Ireland provides battery collection boxes free of charge, which, once filled, are collected and taken for sorting and recycling. These batteries can be turned into a wide variety of things, including bicycles, new batteries, and roads. Since 2011, the partnership between WEEE Ireland and Laura Lynn has raised an incredible €285,000.

Scholarships

Griffith College is committed to making education accessible through a range of scholarships across our campuses. These include academic and sports scholarships, as well as specialist music and drama awards. Together, they help talented and deserving students reach their full potential.

Some of the ways we make education accessible to our students include:

Scholarship Initiatives

The College offers six scholarships (to cover a three- or four-year degree programme) annually – four for the main Dublin campus, one for Cork and one for Limerick. This means that at any point in time between 18 and 24 students are undertaking this scholarship scheme. The scholarship covers the cost of the student’s course at Griffith College and is intended to provide an opportunity for more students to attend a private HEI.

Griffith College Cork is proud to provide an Opportunity Scholarship for the BA (Hons) in Accounting and Finance to a student from Gaelcholáiste Mhuire AG. As a DEIS school, Gaelcholáiste Mhuire AG plays an important role in supporting educational attainment and widening participation in higher education. The scholarship is designed to recognise academic potential and ambition while helping to reduce financial barriers to third-level study. Through this initiative, Griffith College Cork seeks to support talented students in pursuing their educational goals and to promote greater access to higher education for learners from a wide range of backgrounds.

"The Griffith scholarship programme has benefited me greatly; without it I would have struggled to afford the cost of College. As a graduate, it has helped open career paths and is something that employers are very impressed by. Being in the scholarship programme also allowed me to create relationships with scholarship winners from other courses. We were all there throughout our degrees to help and support each other."

Hannah Moran-Jackson, Academic Scholar, BA (Hons) in Fashion Design.

Overseen by the Students’ Union, the College offers a number of sports scholarships to outstanding athletes who show a passion for Griffith College Dublin courses and can demonstrate an ability to play their sport to a very high standard. There are 12 such scholarships available, six each for men and women.

"Studying at Griffith College was one of the most rewarding and fulfilling experiences of my career as a student athlete. I am grateful for the experiences of living in a vibrant young culture, receiving personal attention with my studies, and having a chance to play the game I love at its highest lev

Sustainability

Sustainability is a core part of how Griffith College operates. We've invested in renewable energy and solar power, along with water and waste reduction, cycle-friendly initiatives and heritage restoration. It all adds up to a greener, more sustainable future for our campuses and communities.

Some of the ways we're working towards a greener, more sustainable campus include:

Sustainability Initiatives

As part of our ongoing commitment to sustainability and resource efficiency, Griffith Halls of Residence has implemented several water-saving measures across all apartments. These upgrades include the installation of aerators on showers, kitchen taps, and bathroom sinks, as well as adding toilet tank banks to reduce water usage per flush.

Collectively, these improvements are projected to save over 3,000 cubic metres of water annually, significantly reducing environmental impact. We appreciate the cooperation of all residents as we work to make GHR a greener, more efficient living environment.

The college had a comprehensive energy survey carried out by external auditors in 2022 and has been progressing its recommendations since then in our efforts to reduce our energy consumption and CO2 emissions.

We proudly announce a significant step forward in our commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility. Griffith has recently partnered with a leading wind farm, ensuring that clean, renewable energy meets 100% of our electricity needs. This transition reflects our dedication to reducing our carbon footprint and aligns with our core values of innovation and forward-thinking. By harnessing the power of wind, we are contributing to a greener future and promoting sustainable practices. We are excited to be at the forefront of environmental stewardship, demonstrating our commitment to positively impacting the world.

The AF Building Management System and AF boiler have been replaced, significantly improving the heating system's efficiency in that building.

Upgraded insulation was also installed in the Wellington, Arthur Griffith, Daniel O’Connell, and Richmond buildings, resulting in a 52.09 tCO2e CO2 saving.

Our Halls of Residence have invested considerable effort in reducing their electricity consumption by installing network-enabled storage heating and awareness campaigns. This has reduced their annual consumption by approximately 10%, or 66.2 metric tonnes of CO2. Electric eco heaters are also installed in the CAV building and C block.

Existing gas boilers have been upgraded, and the installation of heating timer replacements on the Dublin Campus has improved the heating system's efficiency, improving the environmental impact of heating the buildings as we transition away from fossil fuels.

Our Facilities team has been installing LED lighting across our Dublin Campus. LED lights are up to 80% more efficient than fluorescent and incandescent lights. 95% of the energy in LED lighting is converted into light, and only 5% is wasted as heat. LED lighting has been installed in the AF Building, Halls of Residence, Design Bunker, C Block, E Block, and the James Stephens Building.

Solar

In May 2023, we deployed our first solar PV array on the Dublin campus, utilising the entire roof space on the AF building as a first proof of concept. The installation will produce just under 2% of the campus's annual electricity requirements. However, that installation paved the way for further deployments after its successful launch, with the approval of solar PV arrays for the Cork and Limerick campuses that will provide 24% and 27% of our annual electricity requirements in those campuses.

The college continues to evaluate all roof spaces for suitability to meet 100% of our electricity requirements, if feasible, via future solar PV deployments.

Green Initiatives

plastic

In tandem with our renewable energy transition, we've implemented a series of complementary green initiatives. This includes installing water refill stations across our campus, which is estimated to save 32,000 single-use bottles annually. This is further enhanced by the move away from single-use plastics in our restaurant.

We've also made strides in minimising plastic waste by providing all staff with reusable 'keep cups' and establishing convenient cup-washing facilities.

These efforts collectively contribute to a more sustainable campus environment, reflecting our ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship and a reduced ecological footprint.

Griffith College is committed to preserving and restoring our built heritage.

Restoration of Historic Quartermaster House.

If you want to learn more about this and the college’s other sustainability activities, feel free to check out our socials!

Griffith College has recently installed new windows at the front of the building, replacing older single-glazed units with modern double glazing. This upgrade improves thermal efficiency, reducing heat loss and helping to lower the building's overall energy consumption. It's a small but meaningful step in our ongoing efforts to make our campus more sustainable, sitting alongside our other initiatives in energy efficiency, insulation and renewable power.

Griffith College is proud to be a member of the Donore Area Sustainability Community.

The DASC is a Community Group dedicated to playing its part in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving the quality of the natural environment in our local area through the organisation and promotion of active travel, biodiversity, and energy sustainability initiatives.

The committee consists of residents and members from various neighbourhood groups:
- Donore Credit Union
- Aloft Dublin City
- Griffith College
- Tenters
- Maryland
- Trees of Tenters

Here at Griffith College Dublin, one of our initiatives to help the environment and to become a greener college includes the installation of two insect hotels. Insect hotels support biodiversity as insect and pollinator habitats dwindle due to large-scale commercial farming, hedgerow removal and human population growth. Insect Hotels supplement the increasing loss of natural habitats, encourage beneficial insects to help control pests, stimulate ecological balance and offer an opportunity for people to learn about insect species.

green

cycle

Earlier this year, our college achieved a significant milestone in promoting sustainable transportation, receiving a gold-tier certification as a Cycle Friendly Employer by the European Union. This prestigious recognition is a testament to our ongoing efforts to encourage eco-friendly commuting among our staff and students.

Building on this achievement, we are excited to announce an innovative pilot program in collaboration with Brompton and Cycle Solutions Ireland. Through this initiative, we are providing staff access to high-quality folding bikes for six months. This program inspires and facilitates our community to embrace more sustainable and active transport options. By making cycling more accessible and convenient, we aim to reduce our campus's reliance on motor vehicles, contributing to a healthier, more environmentally friendly mode of transportation.

You can read more about Griffith College being a cycle-friendly employer at the link below:

Griffith College Pedals Forward: We're Now an EU Certified Cycle Friendly Employer!

Here at Griffith College Dublin, one of our initiatives to help the environment and to become a greener college is to recycle as much of our waste as possible, so it does not go to the landfill and can be reused. All across our Dublin Campus and in the Griffith Hall of Residence, we have installed new bins to help you segregate your waste.

The GHR team run garage sales to give students the opportunity to swap goods, while canned and non-perishable food left behind at the end of term is made available to future residents. We hope all students, staff, and residents will support this green initiative.
