Business of Digital Media

This module aims to provide learners with an overview of the creative and communicative industry in order to enable them to develop a comprehensive understanding of those industries. It does so in order to equip learners with the analytical and critical thinking skills they need to play a part in those sectors. In order to achieve the module learning outcomes, key aspects of the media sectors market structure are addressed as are some key legal and ethical issues. Other relevant areas covered and analysed within this module include marketing, finance, government policy and entrepreneurship in the media sector.

This module investigates the field of interactive digital media design through an understanding of concepts, theories, methodologies, and practices within human-computer interaction design, user interface design, usability and user experience. Learners gain practical experience in multimedia authoring applications.

The ability to understand advanced programming issues and develop complex interactive digital media products is a huge advantage for anyone in the digital media field. Learners learn fundamental programming concepts and use them to develop rich, interactive applications that feature both generated graphics and image manipulation in desktop, web and mobile environments.

This module focuses on the design and development of digital games using a standard games development environment. The module has a strong practical element focussed on developing skills in game development. The learner also covers the core elements of game design and engagement with the user.

Research Methods

This core module serves to significantly deepen the learners’ research skills, both in relation to their module related assignments and later in their completion of their major dissertation / dissertation by practice. Specifically, it extends their abilities as self-directed learners by equipping them with the appropriate vocabulary for reflecting on, critiquing and evaluating their own work and that of others. Throughout the module, they are required to engage in a number of research methodologies and current research issues and trends in the digital media industry. The module also addresses the need for good project management skills and techniques for the successful delivery of any project.

Digital Media and Society

This module examines the impact of Digital and Creative media on contemporary society. Examining theories from sociological, cultural, and communication perspectives, the learner is able to conceptualise and contextualise the impact digital media has on society, its products and services.

With the development of the web and particularly with ubiquitous access through mobile technologies, the web is becoming central to information processing in society. What are the implications of this for society, and for developers of digital media content? The module seeks to develop a questioning culture amongst the learners who develop a holistic view of how technology shapes the world we live in and the world they live in shapes the technology we develop.

This module analyses how we express our experience and communicate our intentions through both the reading of images and the process of image making.

The World Wide Web has become the dominate medium by which digital media is delivered and used worldwide. This module aims to explore the web as a channel of communication, looking at technology, design, business and cultural issues. Through a range of practical assignments learners engage with different types of web application and develop practical skills used for the design and management of online communication.

Desktop Publishing

This module further develops the learners understanding of graphic design, the use of colour, type, imagery and layout. Theories and principles relating to individual and cultural understandings of visual forms and impressions are further explored. Continuing from the visual communications module learners focus and hone their design skills and gain practical experience in desktop publishing and illustration packages.

This module develops competency in the design and deployment of e-learning materials that facilitate learning. Learners come to understand how and ways e-learning is employed and learn how to design a formalized teaching system specifically designed to be carried out remotely. They demonstrate the ability to apply learning principles in the design of e-learning materials.

This module deepens the learners’ understanding of 3D animation principles. The module fosters awareness of applications of 3D and critical evaluation of existing 3D products. It encourages the exploration of creative possibilities for integration of 3D to multimedia products.

The module provides learners with an understanding of programming and information architecture principles required for the development of database-driven websites. The emphasis in the module is on server-side functionality and database access.

This practical module aims to equip learner with the ability to conceive ideas and develop original material that is suitable to approach the production of a short factual item for multiplatform distribution Learners make informed logical and creative decisions at every stage. This a practical module, intends to equip the learners with a range of specialised video production skills such as scheduling shoots, scripting ideas, location filming, and varied editing techniques.

This module introduces learners to the craft and disciplines of writing multimedia scripts. Learners learn the formatting and style requirements of writing fiction and non-fiction scripts. This module provides learners with an introduction to oral storytelling, traditional structure of narratives, multi-story narratives, non-linear structures, and unusual narrative structures (circular, broken, twisted, inverted structures).

This module introduces learners to the fundamentals of 2D and 3D animation. The conceptualisation, design, and creation of 3D products is examined. Learners gain practical experience in 2D animation and begin to explore the possibilities of 3D animation.

Applicants should hold an undergraduate honours degree 2:2 or above. Alternatively applicants with a 2:2 in a Higher Diploma in Science in Computing or related area are eligible to apply

2% Learner Protection Charge

All QQI accredited programmes of education and training of 3 months or longer duration are covered by arrangements under section 65 (4) of the Qualifications and Quality Assurance (Education and Training) Act 2012 whereby, in the event of the provider ceasing to provide the programme for any reason, enrolled learners may transfer to a similar programme at another provider, or, in the event that this is not practicable, the fees most recently paid will be refunded.

Progression

Academic Progression

Graduates of the Postgraduate Diploma in Science in Applied Digital Media course have the option to continue their studies in Griffith College have the option of progressing to the MSc in Applied Digital Media.

Career Progression

 Graduates of the Postgraduate Diploma in Science in Applied Digital Media students will be qualified to work as designers and creative directors in a variety of cross-disciplinary industries (e.g. publishing and the creative arts). They will be able to work effectively as team leaders/managers in the creative media industry, as well as for innovative multimedia projects that involve cross-media content and platforms.

Other careers include content/information managers, industrial and academic research, multimedia systems developers, innovative media practitioners, and as entrepreneurs capable of developing an innovative idea into a full development opportunity.
