This programme is designed for the contemporary practitioner in music education, whether you are interested in teaching in a school or running a practice or studio.

Why Study Music Education at Griffith College?

The Higher Diploma in Arts in Music Education is available on a full or part-time basis over a 1-Year Period, Ireland’s only specialised certification in music education qualifications. The programme will allow students to concentrate on developing their skills with a view to progressing on to a music teaching qualification.

  • Modules are certified under HETAC's Accumulation of Credits and Certification of Subjects Scheme (ACCS).
  • range of study options are available including part-time evening study, with the possibility to take the programme in three stages under the QQI ACCS scheme.

  • Access to fully equipped studios with the latest industry-standard music software for writing, recording, performing, editing, mixing and composing music.

The core content of the programme centres around 72 hours of teaching time (3 hours per week), catalogued in the student's Teaching Portfolio.

Music Technology

This module aims to enable the learner to use Sibelius notation software for transcribing and printing scores and instrumental parts; introduce the learner to the various uses of technology for performing, recording and composing; give the learner a general overview of all aspects of music technology; recording, editing, mixing, sampling, synthesis and MIDI sequencing; and equip the student with the necessary skills and know how to employ the latest technology in instructional activities.

Professional Practice

This module aims to enable the learner to implement codes of best practice in relation to child protection and health and safety. It also provides the learner with a practical framework for managing the administrative, business and financial aspects of running a music school /drama school or practice.

Pedagogy and Music Teaching Placement

This module consists of two parts. The first part deals with Instrumental Pedagogy, and the practical issues relating to individual and group teaching; the second part is Teaching Placement, during which the learner puts into practice the methods and concepts which they encounter in the various modules.

Psychology of Teaching and Learning

This module consists of two parts. Part 1 explores some key psychological theories and their application to teaching and learning and Part 2 introduces the areas of Community Music and Inclusive Education.

Composition and Musicianship Skills

The module aims to advance and develop the aural skills of the learner, with a view to improving musicianship and teaching skills. Learners will develop methods of teaching music theory from an aural perspective and competent conducting techniques for rehearsal and performance and indeed the classroom. The module will give learners an awareness of the requirements for effective, efficient and creative rehearsals and allow them to develop both their compositional skills and their understanding of harmonic syntax for SATB and for writing in a popular idiom. Finally, learners will gain an understanding of arranging or orchestrating music for a variety of ensembles or vocal groups, and to successfully adapt to the availability of different resources.

Performance Education

This module aims to encourage the learner to explore new material and repertoire on their principal instrument and to develop the learner’s knowledge of style, form and historical context of the standard repertoire for their principal instrument. The module will advance and develop the aural and improvisational skills of the learner, with a view to improving musicianship and teaching skills, and will allow the learner to develop methods of teaching music theory from an aural and practical perspective. Learners will gain the proficiency in keyboard skills required for successful instrumental and vocal teaching, and the module will instil the necessity of a continual upgrading and enhancement of the learner’s own practical and performance skills, and encourage excellent practice routines to maintain a high level of musicianship.

How to Apply

Entry Requirements

Primary degree in Music or Primary degree in an unrelated discipline + Grade 8 practical music + Grade 6 in music theory. Candidates with significant prior experience in music education or performance may also be considered under the College’s APL and APEL policy. In all such cases, candidates will be required to submit their application for consideration by the College’s academic and professional council and may be required to present for interview and/or audition.

Applicants over 23 years of age on 1st January 2018 will be asked for a copy of their passport.

An Academic Administration Fee of EUR250.00 and a 2% Learner Protection Charge is applicable each academic year in addition to the fees quoted below. The fees below relate to Year 1 fees only.

General Fee Information

Non-EU students: a Medical Insurance, Student Services and Administration fee of EUR300 is payable each academic year in addition to the fees quoted below.

2% Learner Protection Charge

All QQI accredited programmes of education and training of 3 months or longer duration are covered by arrangements under section 65 (4) of the Qualifications and Quality Assurance (Education and Training) Act 2012 whereby, in the event of the provider ceasing to provide the programme for any reason, enrolled learners may transfer to a similar programme at another provider, or, in the event that this is not practicable, the fees most recently paid will be refunded.

Academic Progression

Graduates of the Higher Diploma in Arts in Music Education may progress on to study at Masters Level, and this programme would equip students for research interests in the following areas: Music Education, Performance and Composition, Psychology of Music Teaching and, Learning, Popular Music Education, Music in Early Childhood, The Arts in Education.

Career Progression

Graduates of the Higher Diploma in Arts in Music Education would be qualified to teach instrumental music, either as private practitioners, or on instrumental programmes which are run through both the public and private sectors.
