Beneath the Same Cross is an A/W 26/27 luxury streetwear collection that examines the vast difference in how death is honoured among Celtic and Mexican cultures. The designer draws on his own Irish heritage, as well as that of his Mexican girlfriend, looking at how dark Celtic mythology and Irish religion contrasts with the colourful celebrations of the Mexico’s Día de los Muertos. Silhouettes have been inspired by the traditional Mexican rural horsemen (charro) and mixed with a workwear influence taken from Ireland`s emigrant labour forces who were builders of great cities such as New York and Boston. The unique floral print, mirroring the marigolds of the Mexican tradition are shown dead and withered, reminding us of our own mortality, while Irish Ogham writing can be seen in the stitch detailing. Fabrics are hardwearing cotton, suede and denim with special ribcage-inspired wadded techniques. Ethically sourced sheepskin from local Mexican farmers supports small, sustainable businesses.
